Your Garden Questions, Answered!

Gardening is community. It’s about learning from each other and growing together. This season, we’ve collected real questions you asked and shared answers from our team to help you grow more in your garden.

Have a question of your own? Drop it in the comments.

Q: What is this weird yellow slime in my mulch?
A: That’s dog barf mold (yes, that’s the real nickname). It’s a harmless slime mold that shows up in humid, shady areas. You can rake it out, let it dry, or just leave it alone. It will fade away on its own.

Q: How can I keep mosquitoes away without harming the plants or pollinators?
A: Choose repellents labeled bee safe or pollinator friendly. You can also plant mosquito-repelling herbs like citronella, lavender, and lemon balm. They look great and smell even better.

Q: Help, moles are tearing up my yard
A: Moles are after grubs and worms in moist soil. Try reducing watering and treating your lawn with beneficial nematodes to control grub populations. We also carry natural repellents that are safe for pets and kids.

Q: What’s a good pest repellent that won’t harm pollinators?
A: Look for OMRI listed products like neem oil or insecticidal soap. Essential oil-based repellents can also be a great option. Our team is happy to help you pick the best one for your garden.

Q: Is it okay to mulch over old mulch?
A: You can, but only if the layer is thin. If there’s already two to three inches, rake it out or remove some before adding more. Too much mulch can lead to compaction and root issues.

Q: How often should I be watering right now?
A: It depends on the plant and weather. A good rule is to check one to two inches down into the soil. If it’s dry, it’s time to water. Not sure? Bring in a photo and we’ll help.

Q: Do I need to fertilize my flowers again in summer?
A: Yes. A mid-season boost helps many annuals keep blooming. Use a water-soluble fertilizer every two to three weeks for best results.

Is it best to apply a water-soluble fertilizer to the whole plant or the base for roots only? And is it safe to add neem oil to vegetables such as lettuce or basil? It stinks so bad, I don’t want my edibles to taste like it!

Why are my son’s white rose flowers showing crispy brown edges?
