Spring garden bed prep that actually makes planting easier
You do not need a perfect plan. You just need a smart start. A little prep now means healthier roots, fewer problems later, and a garden you actually enjoy.
The quick plan
March
Walk your yard. Pick your spots. Decide what you want to grow.
April
Prep soil when it is workable. Plant trees, shrubs, and many perennials.
May
Plant most annuals and warm season vegetables. Refresh mulch after planting.
If you only do one thing: prep the top layer of soil before you buy a cart full of plants.
Why this matters in Ohio
Our soil often runs heavy and clay based. That is not bad soil. It just means roots need help getting started. When you add organic matter and loosen the top layer, water moves better, oxygen reaches roots, and planting gets easier.
Do this in order
1) Walk the bed and pick a goal
- Full sun or part shade
- What struggled last year
- Do you want low maintenance or high color
2) Clean up without overdoing it
- Pull weeds and winter debris
- Lightly loosen old mulch
- Cut back dead material when you see new growth starting
Keep it simple. A tidy bed is easier to plant and easier to maintain.
3) Prep the soil where roots live
Work organic material into the top 8 to 12 inches once the soil is workable. This is where most roots grow and where the biggest payoff happens.

4) Mulch after planting
- Mulch depth: 2 to 3 inches
- Keep mulch off stems and trunks
- Water in plants well after planting
Mulch is a helper. It holds moisture and smooths out temperature swings.
What to plant when
Earlier spring
Trees, shrubs, and many perennials. Cool weather helps roots establish.
Later spring
Most annual flowers and warm season vegetables once nights stay warmer.

Want help planning your bed?
Bring one of these and we will help you build a simple plan that fits your space.
- A photo of your bed
- Approximate bed size
- How many hours of sun it gets
Tip: If your soil is wet and sticky, wait. Working wet soil can compact it and make planting harder later.
