What We Feed Our Plants — And Why It Matters to You

We just launched two new private-label fertilizers: Berns All-Purpose Plant Food (10-4-3) and Berns Organic Plant Food (3-1-1). Both are plant-based, both are used in our greenhouse production, and both are now available in our stores.

But here's the part worth pausing on: the plants you're buying from us right now have been fed with these fertilizers throughout their entire growing life. That means when you bring a plant home and continue feeding it with the same product, you're not introducing anything new. The plant already knows this food. The microbiology already recognizes it.

That continuity matters more than most people realize.

The Problem With Starting Over

When a plant moves from a nursery or garden center to your home, it goes through a transition. New soil. New water. New fertilizer. New everything. Even a healthy plant can stall during that adjustment — putting energy into adapting rather than growing.

Most of the time, there's not much you can do about that. The plant came from somewhere with different practices, different products, different soil. You're starting fresh whether you want to or not.

We wanted to change that.

The Berns Planting Program

The Berns Planting Program is three products that are designed to work together — not just in concept, but literally, at the ingredient level.

Berns Potting Soil

Our custom blended potting mix is what we grow our greenhouse plants in. It's built around sustainably sourced long-fiber peat moss and composted pine bark for drainage, aeration, and strong root development. It's what your new plant already calls home.

Berns Planting Mix

When you're planting in the ground, you're working with Ohio's native clay soil — and clay needs help. Our Planting Mix is a 50/50 blend of composted pine bark and leaf litter compost. The pine bark provides structure and aeration. The compost brings organic matter, nutrients, and biological activity.

Here's where it connects to the potting soil: the composted pine bark in our Planting Mix is the same pine bark in our Potting Soil. So when a plant's roots extend from the container medium into the amended ground soil, they're transitioning into something familiar. Same structure. Same texture. Same foundation.

Berns Plant Food

Both fertilizers — the 10-4-3 All-Purpose and the 3-1-1 Organic — are plant-based formulas. That's not just a feel-good detail. Plant-based fertilizers don't carry the heavy salt load that synthetic fertilizers do, which means the microbiology in your soil stays healthy and intact.

When you plant into amended soil and continue feeding with the same fertilizer we use, you're not disrupting the biological environment the plant has already adapted to. You're bringing it into your garden beds.

Two Fertilizers — Here's How to Choose

Both products do the same job. The difference is concentration.

Berns All-Purpose Plant Food (10-4-3) is the more concentrated formula. You use less per application, which means more applications per bottle. If value and performance are your priorities, this is your pick.

Berns Organic Plant Food (3-1-1) is a lower-concentration formula with a higher application rate to achieve the same results. At the same price per bottle, it costs a little more to use — but for gardeners who are committed to organic growing, that's a trade-off worth making. It's the same quality, same plant-based philosophy, just made for organic gardening.

Both are safe for annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, houseplants, and tropicals. Both work indoors and outdoors.

Why Nobody Else Can Say This

We're a third-generation family owned garden center that grows a significant portion of what we sell. We don't buy plants from a distant wholesaler and hand them off. We know what went into them — because we put it there.

That means when we say "plant in the same soil we grew it in," we mean it literally. This isn't a marketing angle. It's just what happens when you buy a plant at Berns and take it home with these products.

How to Use the Berns Planting Program

For containers: Fill with Berns Potting Soil. Feed regularly with either Berns Plant Food. Container gardens rely on regular feeding as the sole source of nutrients, so consistent feeding matters.

For in-ground planting: Amend your planting area with Berns Planting Mix — roughly 20% of the total soil volume, worked in about 4–6 inches deep. Avoid replacing all the native soil entirely; roots ultimately need to adapt to what's around them, and a hard boundary between amended and native soil can actually cause problems. The goal is a gradual transition.

Then feed with Berns Plant Food throughout the growing season to support establishment and ongoing health.
