Grow Your Own Herbs

Grow Your Own Herbs

Whether you’ve got a backyard garden or just a sunny windowsill, herbs are one of the easiest and most satisfying things to grow!

Growing herbs is one of the simplest ways to make your home feel a little more alive. There’s something satisfying about stepping outside or reaching to a sunny windowsill and seeing fresh basil, parsley, or chives ready to use.

A few herbs can turn an ordinary pot, porch, or kitchen window into something useful and beautiful. They grow quickly, ask for very little, and give right back in fresh flavor, fragrance, and that small daily satisfaction of seeing something thrive because you planted it.

Why Grow Herbs?

  1. Adapt well to Ohio’s climate
  2. Can be grown in-ground, raised beds, or containers
  3. Fresh flavor is better than store-bought
  4. Saves money and reduces waste

🌱 Best Herbs to Grow

  1. Basil – Loves warm weather; plant after last frost
  2. Parsley – Tolerates cooler temps; great for early spring
  3. Chives – Hardy perennial that comes back every year
  4. Mint – Very easy (almost too easy—keep it contained!)
  5. Thyme – Low maintenance and drought-tolerant
  6. Oregano – Spreads easily and thrives in full sun
  7. Cilantro – Prefers cooler weather; great for spring and fall

☀️ Growing Tips

  1. Plant in full sun (6–8 hours daily)
  2. Use well-draining soil
  3. Water consistently, but don’t overdo it
  4. Harvest often to encourage growth
  5. Start seeds indoors in early spring or buy starter plants

Bonus Tip for Ohio Gardeners

  1. Bring herbs like basil and parsley indoors before the first frost
  2. Perennials like thyme, oregano, and chives can survive winter outdoor

The walkabout on Saturday, April 18 in Middletown was very informative and enjoyable. The presenters were very knowledgeable. Even though the weather was not cooperative, the presentation continued and the presenter did her best to keep us dry. I look forward to beginning to grow herbs. Thank you.
