Al and Cherie Berns had a dream and a passion.  In 1956 they bought an acre of land and a small greenhouse in Middletown.  Coming from parents who also grew and sold plants, Al and Cherie began cultivating the next generation of plants and children.  Open only 6 weeks in the spring, the beginnings were humble.  As the children and the business grew, more greenhouses were built.  The original greenhouse was expanded, becoming a full service garden center open all year.

We are now comprised of four divisions: Berns Garden Center, Berns Greenhouses, Berns Landscape and Berns Nursery.  The day to day operations of each division are run by family members and experienced staff members.

Over the years the production greenhouses have increased in size and now total over 120,000 square feet.  It's quite a site to look out over 3 acres of greenhouses full of colorful plants in bloom.  Each season, new plant introductions and old favorites are grown and shipped fresh to the garden center to add color to your  home landscape.  

In 1982, the landscaping division was started at the request of customers looking for installation and maintenance of plants, trees and shrubs at their homes.  This division now includes over 30 people.  Four talented landscape designers along with professional installation and maintenance teams enjoy delivering a service that keeps your home landscape fresh and beautiful.

While you drive the I-75 corridor between Middletown and Monroe, you will notice Berns tree and shrub nursery.  Trees and shrubs are nurtured there for 1 to 3 years until mature and ready for planting or delivery at your home. 

In 1996, the new garden center was built at the corner of Cincinnati-Dayton Road and Greentree Road to showcase the plants and services offered by Berns.  Recently the garden center was recognized as one of the Top 100 destination garden centers across the nation. Stroll covered walkways overflowing with a colorful collection of annuals, perennials and acres of trees and shrubs.  Your friends at Berns will help you pick the perfect plants to create your own backyard retreat.  Today, over 80 employees and family members take great pride in the company and the community we serve.
